What is Naloxone and how it works?

Naloxone (generic form is known as Narcan) is a medication that can be used to reverse the overdose of opioid s like Fentanyl, Heroin, prescription drugs etc. It helps victim start breathing again and helps regain consciousness.

Narcan is available in 2 forms:

1. Nasal Spray

2. Injectable

Naloxone attaches to the same receptors in the brain that opioids attach but stronger and reverse the opioid effect. Once Naloxone is administered, victim should regain breathing within 3-4 minutes. Narcan wears off in 30-90minutes and if any opioid receptors are still in the brain than breathing issue can return. The victim should be taken to emergency room and monitored for 3-4 hours till breathing is normal again. It is very safe to use and can be used on children and pregnant women.
